No, Perry is not useless to the Canadians

A few weeks ago, my colleague Ibsen Pepperall wrote an article in which he severely criticized the acquisition of Corey Perry by Marc Bergevin. I do not agree with him. Yes, it is fair to say that he is no longer the player of yesteryear who used to score 50 goals a season. Last season, he was also among the NHL players who received the most penalties. However, there are some significant factors in his favour. Here are three of them:

Its size

At 6 foot 3 and 205 pounds, Perry has the physique for the job. In recent years, fans often criticized the Tricolore for being too small a team. Some even called them a dwarf team. But that’s a thing of the past! In the last playoffs, the Canadiens’ forwards averaged 190 pounds in weight. At training camp, they weighed 194 pounds. Among the defencemen, it is even higher since they gained 12 pounds. Not bad at all. His size will serve him well to win his battles along the boards or to distribute body checks. Since the beginning of his career, Perry has delivered 945 body checks in 1045 games. Without belittling him, a player like Brendan Gallagher will find it much harder to win his one-on-one battles because of his small size.

His experience and determination

This player, of Canadien origin, is a former Stanley Cup champion. He won it with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. You’ll tell me they already have four players who have a Cup ring. They do. But the saying « Too much is like not enough » doesn’t apply when it comes to experience. With Perry, the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge gets the drive, physical presence at the net and experience he was looking for when the GM tried to get his hands on Wayne Simmonds last season. Perry came to Montreal to win. So did Bergevin. In addition, he’s going to be a great mentor for the youngsters in the organization like Nick Suzuki and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. I’m sure I’ll get tomatoes thrown at me, but the Canadiens can aim for Stanley Cup!
